Mason's "Young Patriots Club" Ready for 9-11 Remembrance

High school group to host veterans, police and firefighters for special 9-11 ceremony.

Students at will end their first week of school honoring American servicemen on Sept. 9th.

The George Mason Young Patriots will welcome local veterans to the school’s gymnasium for a special 9-11 memorial ceremony at 2:30 p.m.

“The Young Patriots is a club that we started last Spring, and we decided at the last meeting of the school year, something that we wanted to do was further the remembrance for September 11th,” said club president James Hickey. “We realized that an extra moment of silence at the end of the day wasn’t enough to memorialize the event.”

Local veterans as well as the City of Falls Church Police Department and Volunteer Fire Department are all welcomed to attend the event.

Hickey, 16, a junior at the school, describes the Young Patriots as a “conservative political ideology” group.

He is passionate about making students and the local communities know about the hard work that police and firefighters perform in Falls Church and around the country everyday.

“The entire student body will be seated in the top rows of the main gym, and we’re not going to turn anybody away,” Hickey said. “But we wanted to make sure we extended the invitation primarily to veterans and firefighters. If there are parents that would like to come we would be more than happy to accommodate. We figured what better way than to honor local veterans, I mean you can't thank them enough, you know?"

Volunteers interested in participating in the memorial service are encouraged to contact the group at gmyoungpatriots@gmail.com. You can also follow the Young Patriots on Twitter at @GMYPat.
