Mt. Daniel All Set to Celebrate 107th Birthday of Dr. Seuss

The Cat in the Hat will be on hand to celebrate the occasion.

Rain or shine, when the 340 Mt. Daniel Elementary School students arrive for their 10 a.m. reading lessons on Wednesday, Dr. Seuss’ titular Cat in the Hat character will be making the rounds.

Thing One and Thing Two will also be on hand helping one of the world’s most famous cats celebrate the 107th birthday of Dr. Seuss.

“It’s just lots of fun,” said Kathleen Halayko, principal of the school. “We are celebrating reading and the love of books. The kids enjoy it.”

The event is part of the National Education Association’s effort dubbed “Read Across America,” an initiative that encourages young readers to read more. The 25 volunteers from the business and the education community will read to the students and take part in the activities throughout the day. Halayko said Dr. Seuss books are familiar to most children and students can relate with them because they’ve heard the stories before. Read Across America was started in 1997.

Halayko said volunteers are not restricted in their choice of books to share with students and are encouraged to share their favorite children’s books during the 30-minute session. Students too young to read will have volunteers read to them in small groups. The Cat in the Hat, Thing One and Thing Two will go from class to class asking the students questions about what they are reading students and thanking readers.
