Stuart Teacher Earns National Certification

Colin McDaniel was one of 19 FCPS teachers accepted into the NBPTS 18-month candidacy program.

An English teacher at recently earned his latest certification from the National Board for Professional Teaching Standards.

Colin McDaniel was one of 19 Fairfax County Public Schools teachers who spent the last 18-months in the NBPTS candidacy program. The certification is the highest credential a teacher can earn, according to a release from the school.

The certification is based on five core propositions: being committed to students and their learning; knowing the subjects taught and how to teach those subjects; being responsible for managing and monitoring student learning; thinking systematically about one’s practice and learning from experience; and serving as a member of one’s learning community, according to the release.

Each candidate going for board certification must devote between 200 to 400 hours of work toward achieving the certification which includes producing four portfolio entries, that include samples of student work and videotapes of the candidate teaching students, and completing six 30-minute assessment center exercises, according to the release.
