T.C. Williams' Titan Pride Shines 42 Years Later

Coaches and football players from TC Williams High School's 1971 'Remember the Titans' football team met Sunday with fans at National Harbor before screening of film.

The coaches and football players from Alexandria's T.C. Williams High School 1971 football team turned back the clock Sunday, remembering the glory days with fans and friends at National Harbor.

Students at T.C. Williams High School and other Alexandria City Public Schools start the 2013-2014 school year Tuesday.

The scholarship fundraiser meet 'n greet included an outdoor showing of the 2000 filmRemember the Titans, starring Denzel Washington as Coach Herman Boone, based on the true story of the 1971 team and its bumps along the way to a state championship. The film delves into desegregation and reportedly fictionalizes some of the events.

Hundreds of fans and friends turned out Sunday evening for the event, held at Prince George's County, Maryland's National Harbor, just across the Potomac from Alexandria. The weather cooperated, with a breeze blowing off the water as patrons viewed the film from lawn chairs on a plaza ringed with restaurants where many dined outdoors.

A long table was set up in front of a picture-perfect view of the harbor, where people stood in line for several hours before the film, to get a chance to meet the coaches and players from the team. Donations were accepted for photos and signed T-shirts.

The movie was free; donations and proceeds go to the 1971 Original Titans Foundation, which awards scholarships to T.C. Williams High School seniors.

T.C. Williams' beat Oakton Friday in their first football game of the season, 38-2 and face the Centreville Wildcats Friday. Here's more information on TC's upcoming football schedule.
