FCCPS board set to vote on FY 2012 budget.

After weeks of meetings and number crunching the Falls Church City Public Schools board is set to vote on the fiscal year 2012 budget tonight.

Board Chair Joan Wodiska said she and her colleagues on the board came to a consensus Saturday at a work session that to remain competitive, teachers and staff needed a mid-year step increase. The board also agreed on a one-time retention bonus for all staff.

“That said, the board will take final action on Tuesday night and conversations continue,” Wodiska said. “The final disposition of the school board’s recommendations will rest with City Council, the public and will be impacted by state K-12 funding.”

Superintendent Lois Berlin presented her proposed FY 2012 budget of $37.7 million on Jan. 11. The school system is currently running on a $37.4 million budget. The board will vote on the budget tonight at City Hall at 7 p.m. Wodiska said the board accepted numerous recommendations from Berlin to reprogram and redirect school funds to maximize the impact for students.

Wodiska said she feels grateful and innovative after viewing the budget on the table heading into the vote. She said she’s grateful for the public’s input, the hard work of the school staff and the commitment from the school board.

“While no budget is perfect – it’s too large or too small to some – at the end of the day, the school board’s budget reflects the values, priorities and views of citizens and will help ensure that our schools are truly world-class,” Wodiska said. “The school board’s budget will be quite different from year’s past.”
