Two New Inductees for Mason Athletic Hall of Fame

The George Mason High Athletic Hall of Fame has opened their doors to two new inductees for their Class of 2012.

On Tuesday, the committee announced that 2006 graduate Travis Greene and the 1962 baseball team will join dozens of others in the HOF for their athletic contributions.

Greene, now an assistant football coach at Morrisville State College in New York, was a three-sport athlete at Mason, lettering in football, basketball and track and field. In his Mustang career, he rushed for more than 3,000 yards and 38 touchdowns before heading to Elon University, where he earned four letters as a defensive back, linebacker and member of special teams.

“I was very thankful,” Greene said during a telephone interview Tuesday. “I was elated. I hoped I would get in but I didn’t think it would be this soon.”

A nine-person committee selected the latest two inductees for the HOF. Nominations can come from anyone and the committee deliberates during the spring. Tom Horn, athletic director at Mason, said there is no minimum number of inductees per HOF class. We will start an additional round of deliberations in a couple of months. A consensus of the committee is required for election to the HOF. 

Now on the recruiting trail for Morrisville State, Greene says he enjoys coaching. As a defensive backs coach, he said he enjoys mentoring young players about his experiences.

“Coaching is very rewarding,” Greene said. “Coming out of college I wanted to keep playing but that didn’t work out.”

The 1962 baseball team played in an era prior to regional and state play-offs and championships, but had one of the most impressive seasons in school history, compiling a 12-2 record. Anchored by Charter Hall of Fame players John Carlo (1962) and Don Roth (1963), the team featured star pitcher Charlie Albright who was 10-2 and threw four of the team’s five shutouts, including one against the George Washington University freshman team.

The team’s only losses were both 1-0 games.  That year, the Mustangs’ 1962 baseball team outscored their opponents 122 to 23. 

Much like Major League Baseball, the hall could elect not to induct anyone, Horn said, but they could induct up to 12 people if they wanted. Horn said the classes of 2012 and 2013 will be honored together in the fall.
