Whiz Kid: The Mascots of the Falls Church City Public Schools

This group of Whiz Kids know how to have fun!

Each week, Falls Church Patch will seek suggestions from readers for individual kids, youth groups, teens, and even sports teams that wow us with their accomplishments. We want to hear about these amazing children and teens and select one each week as the Patch Whiz Kid.

This week’s Whiz Kids are anonymous behind their big, furry masks, but we know them only as “Danny the Hippo,” “TJ Tiger”, “Tito the Husky” and “Mustang Sally.”

The four students all attend Mary Ellen Henderson Middle School, said Marybeth Connelly who nominated the group for our Whiz Kids. She said the group of students volunteered to be the school mascots at basketball and football games in the fall. Most of them are sixth grade boys, she said, but there have also been seventh grade girls and a tenth grade girl who served as a mascot. Most importantly is their ability to make people laugh and to help the crowd get excited about the games. They are willing to be silly while wearing a sweaty costume, Connelly said. They dance, take foul shots at halftime, toss t-shirts and prizes, and cheer for the teams. During football season they entertained by racing on the sidelines.
