Mustangs Win Bull Run District Soccer Championship

Head coach Jennifer Parsons was named the Bull Run District coach of the year.

The George Mason High Mustangs won the Bull Run District Championship, defeating Clarke County High at home Wednesday night 2-1.

The hot and humid field conditions were no match for the Mustangs tireless effort as they took a 2-0 lead in the first half and controlled the ball throughout the game until Clarke County senior Megan Allison gave them a scare late in the game after she scored a goal with under five minutes remaining.

“I think being in this game for the fourth time, I think we do have pretty good experience on the field knowing how to handle that,” said Mustangs’ head coach Jennifer Parsons, referring to Clarke County’s late game goal.  “They handled it well, especially being a man down, I know we can play better but I think championship games bring out some nerves and we just continued to play hard.”

Late in the game a would be Mustangs score was reversed by a yellow card, but Mason was able to hold on for the wins.  They did an excellent job of dominating possession of the ball, rarely allowing the visiting Eagles to get scoring opportunities. Senior defender Katja Butts was there virtually every time it seemed the Eagles would get within scoring range of the goal.

Butts was a second team All Bull Run District selection along with sophomore Maggie Mascarenhas.

Their teammates Leah Roth, senior co captains Elle Silverman and Hannah Walker and freshman Claire Trevisan were all named as first team All Bull Run District selections.

“The senior class is amazing, and they absolutely deserve to go out on a winning note,” said Parsons.  “I’m so happy for them, they’ve worked really hard this year and throughout their season here.”

Senior co captain Violet Miller was chosen as the Bull Run District player of the year.

“I definitely think as a senior all this stuff means so much more, last year was just as important but to have worked so hard all four years and to be rewarded for it was amazing,” said Miller.

Miller played on all three girls Virginia State A varsity championship teams throughout her previous three seasons with the Mustangs, and she wants to win another one this season.

“We’re going to have to play game by game and think about Radford as a goal, but not focus on it too much,” said Miller.  “We just have to take it step by step and keep working hard.”

The Mustangs will play the opening round of the regional tournament on Memorial Day at 5pm at George Mason High School.
