Graham Road Elementary Celebrates Family Literacy Day with Help from KPMG

Students went home with new books to read.

At KPMG’s “Reading Relay” kickoff event Friday, KPMG Chairman and CEO John Veihmeyer and wife Beth read to kindergarten students at FCPS' Graham Road Elementary School, 2831 Graham Road.

The nationwide Reading Relay is being conducted to commemorate the fifth anniversary of KPMG’s Family for Literacy program.

More than 6,000 books were donated and handed out to students at the school. The school sees more than half of its student population participating in the free-lunch program.

KPMG is one of the largest professional services companies in the world and one of the Big Four auditors. Since its inception in 2008, KPMG's Family for Literacy has distributed more than two million new books to low-income children in more than 90 communities across the United States.

What distinguishes the program from most other corporate philanthropic efforts? It was developed not only for its partners and employees, but also for the company's spouses, significant others, children, and other relatives, as well as KPMG interns, alumni, and retirees across the country.

The result: An extended family of volunteers working together to impact children's education from the very start, laying the foundation for their future success, while helping eradicate illiteracy in the United States.
