Northern Virginia congressman says his seniority benefits constituents.
Since 1990, when Rep. Jim Moran was first elected to Congress, ‘80s music has lost its popularity, come back in style and is on its way out again. A lot can happen in 22 years, the time Moran has spent serving in Congress. It’s the seniority gained over that time, said Moran, a Democrat representing Virginia’s 8th District, that allows him to influence legislation beneficial to the people of Northern Virginia and is the reason why he deserves a 12th term in the U.S. House of Representatives. Bruce Shuttleworth knows it takes hard work and tenacity for a political newcomer to edge out a 22-year incumbent congressman. Despite long odds and a funding gap that favors Democratic primary opponent Rep. Jim Moran, Shuttleworth thinks he’s got what it takes to win. “In 12 years of living here, I did not meet many people who enjoyed voting for my competitor, and without any prompting, quite a few people said they wanted a fresh perspective,” Shuttleworth told Patch. “And so I’m going to test that, and we’ll see how that works out. Arlington resident Jason Howell has less than $10,000 in the campaign bank and needs 1,000 signatures by June 12 to get on the ballot.
Arlington resident Jason Howell isn't letting incumbent Congressman Jim Moran's sizable war chest of nearly half-a-million dollars get in the way of running for Congress. Howell's got less than $10,000 in the bank for his campaign, so he's hitting every local barbecue, 5k and neighborhood meeting he can to help get the word out. Bruce Shuttleworth had claimed he was unlawfully left off the Democratic primary ballot.
The Virginia State Board of Elections announced Monday evening it would allow a Democratic primary challenger to U.S. Rep. Jim Moran on the ballot after initially disqualifying him. Bruce Shuttleworth, an Arlington resident, filed a lawsuit last week in the U.S. District Court for the Eastern District of Virginia. In the lawsuit, he claims Democratic Party officials failed to certify valid signatures his campaign collected from voters residing in the 8th Congressional District, leaving Moran the only candidate to be certified for the ballot. The Washington Post reported Monday evening that Justin Riemer, deputy secretary of the State Board of Elections, said the state Democratic party had certified Shuttleworth’s name. Shuttleworth was originally sponsored by a Texas Republican PAC, which subsequently dropped him.
