Residents and emergency responders ready for hurricane.
Hurricane Sandy made her way into the headlines toward the end of the week and we should see the worst she has to offer some time today. No matter what weather the hurricane brings to the area, Falls Church is ready. Earlier in the week, city council voted unanimously to sell the land it owns to a developer who wants to bring a Harris Teeter to the area. The city also announced they will sit down to discuss selling Falls Church Water to Fairfax Water soon. Congressman Jim Moran (D-8th District) was in the news because of his son, Patrick, allegedly discussing how skirt around voter identification laws. Mustangs are one win away from their first Bull Run District Championship in volleyball.
The George Mason High volleyball team moved a step closer to a Bull Run District championship after sweeping Manassas Park High in three sets Tuesday. With a win on the road over district foe Clarke County High on Thursday, the Mustangs (12-3 overall, 11-2 in district) can hang their first volleyball championship banner in the gym. “We’re playing for out first district championship Thursday,” said Head Coach Erik Healey. “If we beat Clarke, we’ll have our first district championship in school history.” The Mustangs beat visiting Manassas Park in three sets (25-9; 25-10 and 25-16) on senior night. Sally Karstens breaks school record for kills in a game for second time this season.
Sally Karstens had no idea how close she was to breaking the George Mason High School's single-game volleyball record for kills in a game. Then again, it didn’t matter because the junior middle hitter had set the previous record, but she broke it again with 13 kills against visiting Central Woodstock High (0-8). The Mustangs (2-2) won three straight sets to win the Bull Run District match. “Coach (Erik) Healy told me I was two kills away and I just kept playing,” said Karstens, a team co-captain. Karstens had set the record at 12 earlier this season.
