Police Still Investigating September Vehicle Vandalism in Falls Church

Fairfax County adding patrols to areas between Seven Corners and Bailey’s Crossroads.

No one has been arrested for breaking out the windows of about 30 vehicles in September between the Bailey’s Crossroads and Seven Corners communities in Falls Church. Capt. Gun Lee, commander for the Fairfax County Mason District Police Station, said patrols have been added to those areas to prevent another instance like the one in mid-September. Police quickly dispelled any rumors that the alleged suspects were targeting the Dar Al-Hijrah mosque. Several vehicles just outside the mosque’s gates were damaged including the car of Imam Johari Abdul-Malik. “We’re still investigating this,” Lee said Friday morning. “We’re confident we will close this case.” Police believe the vandals started their spree in a seven-mile radius late Sept. 14 and…

No Arrests in Falls Church Area Vandalism Spree

Fairfax County police are looking for the vandals that damaged more than 30 cars in the Bailey’s Crossroads and Seven Corners areas.

Fairfax County police are still looking for the vandals that damaged more than 30 vehicles in the Bailey’s Crossroads and Seven Corners areas of Falls Church in September. Capt. Gun Lee, commander of the Mason District police station, said it’s just a matter of time before police make an arrest in the case. Police couldn’t reveal all of their investigative tactics in the case but Lee said officers have been proactive and increased patrols in the areas. “We’re still investigating this case,” Lee said. “Hopefully we’ll get more information from the community.” Police immediately were able to investigate and prove the vandalism spree wasn’t associated with the Dar Al-Hijrah mosque in Falls Church. With several vehicles damaged outside the …

Police: Vandalized Cars At Falls Church Mosque Not a Hate Crime

Fairfax County commander says he does "not want fear in our community," plans to investigate

Fairfax County police don’t believe the 30 cars vandalized around the Dar Al-Hijrah mosque in Falls Church early Saturday morning were hate crimes. Capt. Gun Lee, commander of the Mason District police station, said several vehicles between Seven Corners and Bailey’s Crossroads were vandalized between Friday night and Saturday morning. Lee said the incidents happened in a seven-mile radius. “It is very difficult, if not impossible, to say the mosque was targeted,” Lee said. Johari Abdul-Malik, an Imam at the mosque, said several vehicles, including his own, had windows broken out. The damage was first noticed after sunrise, when several members of the mosque were leaving a prayer service. Abdul-Malik said the senior Imam at the mosque, who…

Actually Andre, as I understand it, no car "at the mosque" (i.e., on the property of the mosque) was vandalized. Not only cars parked on the streets NEAR (not "at") the mosque were vandalized, but in a wide area going all the way back to Route 50 and even down to Lake Barcroft were hit. My entire point is that this should not be made into an "anti-hate" situation when it should be an anti-…   more ›

Mason District Supervisor Bringing Diversity Program to Falls Church Mosque

Penny Gross said she has held program for almost 10-years to open the lines of communication in Northern Virginia.

You don’t have to be a Muslim to attend the Kaleidoscope program at the Dar Al-Hijrah Islamic Center in Falls Church Wednesday night. In celebration of Ramadan, the center will host the program created by Mason District Supervisor Penny Gross. The program recognizes diversity and promotes understanding and cooperation between the various cultural groups in Northern Virginia. Gross said the program started as a discussion group in 1998 and some of the members of the mosque were in attendance then. She said it was a mutual connection for the two groups to come together and open the lines of communication. “There were folks from the mosque there and they asked if we would like to hold our monthly meeting at their place during Ramadan,” Gross …

Mosque Opens up to Community During Ramadan

Falls Church mosque invites all faiths in during Ramadan to open lines of communication, understanding.

As the sun set Thursday night marking the beginning of Ramadan, Muslims in Northern Virginia are partaking in their first day of fasting during the 30-day observance. Through Aug. 18, Muslims will celebrate Ramadan, a time to gain God conscientiousness through fasting. Johari Abdul-Malik, Imam at the Dar Al-Hijrah Islamic Center in Falls Church, said the mosque has several things planned for the entire community, not just those of the Muslim faith. “Generally this is a time people can invite a friend or neighbor to the mosque,” Abdul-Malik said Thursday. Throughout the month of Ramadan, the ninth month of the lunar calendar Muslims follow, prayer will begin at sundown at the Falls Church mosque. Abdul-Malik said the prayers, along with a …
