Council will hear public comments on the $74.9 million proposed budget.
The city will host the first of two Town Hall Meetings Saturday to discuss Falls Church City Manager Wyatt Shield’s proposed $74.9 million fiscal year 2014 budget. The meeting will be held at the Falls Church Community Center at 10 a.m. Last year, about 25 people attended the meeting, down from the 40 in 2011. Susan Finarelli, spokeswoman for the city, said they anticipate about 60 people will attend the meeting. “Public input is an essential component of our budget process, providing both the city manager and council with input on what is important to the community and what priorities they hold,” Finarelli said. “Whether the public provides that feedback in person via the Town Hall Meetings or public hearings, or electronically via budget…

Budget is $5 million more than the approved FY13 budget.
Minutes after Falls Church City Manager Wyatt Shields proposed his $74.9 million fiscal year 2014, School Board Chair Susan Kearney told council how much of a transfer the schools would need. Falls Church City Public Schools will need $33.6 million of their $43.6 million from the city, she said. For FY 2013, FCCPS received $29.9 million from the city. Kearney said the school system’s budget is driven by increases in student enrollment. The proposed FCCPS budget also includes a step increase for system employees. “We have a lot more kids than we had years ago,” Kearney said. “This is a dramatic increase for us. The proposed budget, up more than $5 million from FY13’s adopted $69.3 million budget, devotes 45 percent to the schools and $33.8 …

Tax hike, no employee raises are some of the issues supervisors will tackle in committee meeting for Fiscal Year 2014 spending plan
The Fairfax County Board of Supervisors will begin to dig into the meat of the Fiscal Year 2014 budget during its first budget committee meeting Tuesday afternoon. Supervisors will gather at 1 p.m. Tuesday in conference rooms 9 and 10 at Fairfax County Government Center to begin hammering out the details of County Executive Ed Long’s $7 billion advertised budget, which features no raises for employees and a slightly higher tax rate. The committee is also expected to go over the $2.5 billion Fairfax County Public Schools budget for fiscal 2014. School Board members requested $95 million from supervisors - a 5.5-percent increase in transfer - for a total of $1.78 billion. But Long was only able to give schools a 2 percent increase in …

The county faces a $169 million shortfall.
Fairfax County Executive Ed Long will unveil the county’s proposed Fiscal Year 2014 budget Tuesday. The county faces budget shortfalls of $169 million and $274 million in fiscal years 2014 and 2015, respectively. In order to better prepare for the future, he says, Long will present a multi-year budget plan for FY2014-2015 during the Board of Supervisors regularly scheduled Feb. 26 meeting. Those shortfalls are based on keeping the tax rate unchanged while also increasing the transfer to Fairfax County Public Schools. Fairfax County School Board officials intend to ask for an increase of 5.5 percent – or $92.4 million – for a total transfer of $1.77 billion. During a joint meeting of the two boards in November 2012, Long included an …

Officials seek input on how to address projected yearly shortfalls of $100 million. Public meetings are this week.
Fairfax County officials want public input on possible cuts and funding priorities in the fiscal year 2014 and 2015 budgets. According to a presentation by county staff, revenues for the next two years are expected to grow minimally – just under 3 percent. But expenditures are projected to be closer to 5 percent. This leaves the county with a projected shortfall of $100 million per year, said County Executive Ed Long. “The combination of flat revenue growth due to the slow economic recovery and increasing demand and requirements for services means that the county faces a projected budget shortfall of more than $100 million in both FY 2014 and 2015,” Long said in statement. In light of these factors, Long has already instructed county …
