Three local restaurants were inspected recently—here are the restaurant health inspection reports provided by the Virginia Department of Health.
In Virginia, restaurant inspection reports are not quite as simple as getting a letter grade or an easy-to-see number rating to post in the front window. With that said, we all want to know how our favorite restaurants stack up on cleanliness and sanitation. A "critical violation" is one that "poses a direct or immediate threat to the safety of the food being served." Non-critical violations are generally related to cleaning or maintenance. "Ideally, an operation would have no critical violations, or none which are not corrected immediately and not repeated. In our experience, it is unrealistic to expect that a complex, full-service food operation can routinely avoid any violations," according to the Virginia Department of Health's (VDH) …

Natural gas heater in the living room ruled the cause of the blaze that destroyed the single level home.
Investigators say a wall-mounted natural gas heater caused a fire in the living room of a home where a hearing-impared mother and daughter died in January, according to new information from the Fairfax County Fire and Rescue Department. Firefighters were called to the single family home in the 3100 block of Manor Rd. around 3:20 a.m. on Jan. 23. In January, Fairfax County Fire and Rescue spokesman Capt. William Moreland said the home was fully engulfed when they arrived. Laura Snyder-Gardner was a faculty member at Gallaudet University and her daughter, Mary Ann, was a junior student at the Model Secondary School for the Deaf. A memorial was held for the mother and daughter at Gallaudet and a scholarship was set up in their names. …

As part of our new Smart Spending series, Patch wants to uncover the true going rate for various goods and services in town, so you'll know exactly how much you should pay for what you need. Help us out by replying in the comments.
This week: How much do lawn services cost? How much do you pay for your lawn service? And what does that cover - just mowing, or does it cover weeding, pruning, planting? Please share in the comments below - we promise we won't judge you! And if you've got a lawn service you love, tell us that too. Some Falls Church residents have used Wayne's Lawn & Landscaping Service and KR Landscaping for their yards. This is the first of an ongoing series, "What's the Going Rate for..." where Patch seeks to uncover how much things cost so you never have to ask again.

The driver of the car sustained minor injuries. No one was home at the time of the incident.
The driver of a small car escaped with minor injuries after she drove her vehicle through the front of a home in the 2800 block of Great Oak Court in Falls Church Monday. Fairfax County Police are investigating why the woman drove her car into the home. Around 11 a.m., Fairfax County Fire and Rescue were called to the empty home and when they arrived, they found the blue four-door car sitting partially inside the home, said Capt. William Moreland. The driver of the car, a visibly shaken woman with bruises to her face, refused to comment on the crash. Neighbors watching a tow truck remove the vehicle from the home also declined to comment on the crash. Moreland said a building inspector would look over the home to decide if it is safe for …

Police combed the area looking for the three men from the air and land with a helicopter and police dogs. Around 9:30 p.m., a man was walking along Williams Lane in Falls Church near Columbia Pike when the trio allegedly walked up on him and demanded his money, according to a Fairfax County Police release.
