Seven women came together to buy a local Curves to prevent the women-only fitness center from closing.
When Linda Mason and some of her friends heard the West Broad Street Curves in Falls Church was going to close, they took action. With the location slated to close last October, Mason and six other women started the process to buy the business. They just signed the final paperwork this week. Friday, they held an open house for returning members and possible new ones. “The previous owner has another business and she needed to sell this one,” Mason said Friday. “We didn’t want it to close.” Members work out on a circuit of machines for 30 minutes, three days a week with 30 second recovery periods between each exercise station. 24 Hour Fitness looks to help Falls Church area residents with convenient workout times.
City officials from Falls Church have been working on landing a 24 Hour Fitness franchise and Friday those efforts saw the national gym open its first Virginia location. Rick Goff, economic development director for the City of Falls Church, said the city had been talking with 24 Hour Fitness since about August of 2010. The 48,000 square foot facility is the first around the clock gym in city limits. “The sleek, modern building is now the showcase for the historic gateway from Seven Corners,” Goff said Monday. “We believe the city's residents and workers will enjoy an option for exercising any time of day or night.” Mayor Nader Baroukh was on hand Friday morning for the gym’s ribbon cutting ceremony. They began running for different reasons, but Sunday they ran with the same goal -- finish their first Marine Corps Marathon.
The 36th Marine Corps Marathon (MCM) on Sunday is limited to 30,000 participants. Yet registration sold out in record time -- 28 hours, four minutes. Three first-time MCM runners who trained with Potomac River Running (Burke and Reston) gave an overview of their preparation. Prior to July 2010, I had never run more than a couple miles at a time, and I have always struggled with my weight. Between being a single mother, working full time and going to school part time, my weight had ballooned to 240 by the end of 2009.
