Fewer Students Arrested for Possession of Marijuana

Police say most Falls Church area high school students students caught in possession of marijuana are users, not sellers.

Arrests for possession of marijuana at the four Falls Church-area high schools have gone down this academic year. During the 2011-2012 academic year, Falls Church, JEB Stuart, George Marshall and George Mason high schools had a combined total of 10 student arrests for possession of marijuana. Through the end of April this academic year, the schools only accounted for eight such arrests. “Teens get marijuana from numerous people,” said Lt. Jimmy Cox with the Fairfax County Police Office of Organized Crime and Narcotics. “Parents, friends of parents, older brothers or sisters, suppliers of older brothers and sisters, suppliers in the school, and people who drive to Washington, DC and purchase it on the street.” Here are the number of …

As the school year draws to a close, most George Marshall High School juniors will be looking for summer jobs or prepping for one more round of SATs. But 17-year-old Sammy Hakim will be graduating early and chasing her dream: a career in music. Hakim writes pop songs – she said she’s compared to Taylor Swift and Kelly Clarkson – and she does so with great success. Her recent single “Mark Me” got her nominated for New Music Weekly’s “New Top 40 Artist” and “Breakthrough Artist” awards, and her tune “Fearless” is a finalist in the International Song Competition. Hakim has been writing music for about five years, she told Patch, but she’s been playing instruments for most of her life. An accomplished singer, Hakim also plays the guitar, piano…

The Statesmen were down 34-19 at the half and when they returned to the court for the second half, they didn’t warm up. Instead, Head Coach Dan Hale said he told his team in the locker room you can only win games you’re down in two points at a time. Senior Douglas Turpin heard Hale loud and clear and scored the first points of the second half on drive into the paint. Marshall outscored Chantilly 18-5 in the third quarter and pulled within two points of the Chargers. Hale said he was proud of his team for fighting and making it a 39-37 ball game. “I was proud of my boys for …

WEEK IN REVIEW: President Obama Stops by Falls Church

Falls Church dealt with death of a local college student who was a JEB Stuart High alum.

President Barack Obama made his way to Falls Church last week to meet with a family to discuss how the “fiscal cliff” would affect them. The president also filmed the meeting to serve in part of his efforts to sway public opinion and pressure Congress to come to a resolution. The Falls Church and JEB Stuart High communities were devastated to learn of the death of University of Virginia senior Casey Schulman. Schulman was killed in a snorkeling accident while participating in the Semester at Sea program. For a second time this year, a sewage leak canceled classes at Mary Ellen Henderson Middle School. Falls Church City Public Schools officials said the two leaks were not connected and they will keep a close check on the sewage system …

Fairfax Students Taking More Advanced Classes

Marshall, Stuart AP scores amongst eight county schools offering the IB diploma.

The number of Fairfax County Public Schools students taking higher-level courses is rising, the system said this week. Data released by the system shows a significant increase in the total number of students enrolled in classes as well as the number of exams given. It also shows a higher percentage of students are earning a passing score on Advanced Placement exams, though the percentage of International Baccalaureate students scoring 4 or higher on their exams dipped slightly. FCPS Superintendent Jack Dale said in a statement the increase can be attributed in part to more access to AP and IB coursework and differentiated instruction at the schools. “The increases in AP and IB participation are the result of an emphasis on expanding access…

Playing baseball is what Michael Evans has wanted to do since he was a kid. And the 18-year-old left-handed pitcher at George Marshall High School will get a chance to do it as he continues his career at James Madison University next season. Evans, of Falls Church, said he really enjoyed the JMU coaching staff and players but it was what the school offered academically that lured him. “They have a new engineering program which is what I want to study,” Evans said. “My other scholarship offer came from Saint Joseph’s University (Pennsylvania) but they didn’t have an engineering program.” The 6-foot-4 tEvans earned second-team all-Liberty District in 2012 as a pitcher for the Statesmen. The Statesmen finished 12-8 last season and lost in the…
