The 14 seed Harvard University, led by head coach and Falls Church native Tommy Amaker, stunned No. 3-seed University of New Mexico 68-62 Thursday night and shook up the West Region in the process. It was the first ever NCAA tournament win for Harvard. The Crimson faceoff against the six seeded University of Arizona Saturday night at 6:10 p.m. (EST). Thursday afternoon before Harvard and New Mexico tipped off, Alma Amaker, mother of the Crimson’s coach, said, “They have to contain New Mexico’s center, shut down their three pointers and Harvard has to shoot more three pointers.” Guards Laurent Rivard (5-9 from three point range) and Christian Webster (3-5 from beyond the arch) made sure Harvard did well from downtown. The brother and sister duo of David and Rebecca Tax, owners of Clare and Don’s Beach Shack and Mike’s Deli and Lazy Sundae, started a Clarendon tradition that’s still going on. The Clarendon-Courthouse Mardi Gras Parade is their creation and has grown tremendously since its inception. Members of the Northern Virginia chapter of the National Organization of the Reform of Marijuana Laws held a meeting in Falls Church last week and the topic was legalizing marijuana in Virginia. Henry Darmstadter considered Tulane University and Harvard University before signing with the Hoyas.
When Henry Darmstadter arrived at George Mason High School five years ago, he had never played organized football. Tuesday, the second team All Bull Run District player signed to continue his football career at Georgetown University. Darmstadter, who will compete for a kicking job for the Hoyas, joins Stephen Lubnow as the second player in as many years from Mason to go onto to play at a NCAA Football Championship Subdivision (formerly Division I-AA) school. Georgetown plays in the Patriot League. “They said when I come in I have a chance to compete,” the 5 feet 7 inch tall, 165 pound Darmstadter said. With reversal on affirmative action, enrollments could become less diverse.
Hispanics, African Americans and Asians make up about 30 percent of George Mason University's student body, but, a few years from now, that percentage could drop if the Supreme Court reverses its position on affirmative action. Last week, the court announced it will hear arguments this fall for a Texas case in which the plaintiff claims she was discriminated against attending the University of Texas because she is white. The use of affirmative action in college admissions was last upheld in 2003, but the makeup of the Supreme Court has since changed significantly.
