Northern Virginia Congressman Gerry Connolly (D-11th) said Tuesday that Republican presidential nominee Mitt Romney's recently released comments in a controversial videotape make him "unfit for office." Connolly spoke to about 75 residents of the Greenspring Retirement Community in Springfield during a campaign appearance. Romney's comments, secretly taped without his knowledge, featured a controversial statement in which he said that 47 percent of the electorate do not pay income taxes and are dependent on the government and consequently support President Obama's candidacy. Forty-fourth annual Democratic fundraiser held after storm knocks out power to thousands across Northern Virginia.
The show must go on, as they say, and it did for the Mason District's 44th Annual Crab Feast, a popular fundraiser held by Mason District Democrats. After a strong storm hit Northern Virginia Saturday afternoon, power was knocked out to more than 100,000 in Northern Virginia. Those in attendance at the fundraiser — about 150 — included Congressman Gerry Connolly, Mason District Supervisor Penny Gross, Mason School Board member Sandy Evans, Mason District Chair Rachel Rifkind, state Senate Leader Dick Saslaw, state Sen. Mark Herring, and Delegates David Bulova and Alphonzo Lopez. Northern Virginia's three congressmen called on the Federal Communications Commission on Thursday to take action that will prevent future outages to the region's 911 systems. In a letter to FCC Chairman Julius Genachowski, U.S. Reps. Jim Moran, Gerry Connolly and Frank Wolf asked that the commission dust off a post-Hurricane Katrina regulation that would have required all telecommunications companies to provide at least eight hours of backup power for all cell phone towers. High Court ruled 5-4 today to uphold what some call 'Obamacare.'
Area leaders were quick to react today to the news that the Supreme Court upheld President Barack Obama's health reform law. Virginia Gov.
