Metro Lifts Water Ban in Preparation for Excessive Heat

Riders allowed to consume water on trains, buses and in stations through Monday evening.

Metro riders are permitted to carry and consume water throughout the system Thursday afternoon through Monday night, the Washington Metropolitan Transit Authority announced. WMATA is allowing water—and only water—because of the expected extreme temperatures over the weekend. Much of the region will be under an excessive heat watch on Friday.    The lift on Metro’s “no drinking” policy will remain in effect until the system closes on Monday night. Water can be consumed on trains and busses and in stations. WMATA encourages riders to use water containers that can be tightly secured and to use trash receptacles to dispose of any waste. National Weather Service Issues Heat Advisory

Warning in effect from noon to 8 p.m. — here's how to stay cool

With temperatures expected to climb to the middle and upper 90s—and heat index values that could reach 105—the National Weather Service has issued a heat advisory from noon to 8 p.m. Wednesday across Northern Virginia and Fairfax County. The combination of hot temperatures and high humidity puts those who are outdoors for an extended period of time, as well as groups like children and the sick, disabled or elderly, at risk for heat exhaustion and other heat-related illnesses, the advisory says.
