Virginia's economy is relatively strong, but retailers only expect a modest increase in spending this year nationwide.
Black Friday, Small Business Saturday, holiday parties — it's an expensive time of year. According to the National Retail Federation's national holiday consumer spending survey (conducted by BIGinsight), the average holiday shopper will spend about $750 on gifts, décor, holiday cards, entertaining and other things this season. That's a minor increase from about $740 — the amount shoppers spent last year. Two-thirds of respondents to a recent poll by the NPD Group said they “plan to spend about the same” as last year, while 10 percent planned to “spend more.” Will you be more creative with your gifting, or are you planning to rely on more social shopping sites like Groupon and Living Social for cheaper gifts? Holiday shopping events in Falls Church are underway.
All three Merrifield Garden Center locations will host “Ladies Night,” from 6 p.m. through 9 p.m. to kickoff the holiday shopping season Thursday night. Free wine and food will be served. The Recreation and Parks Department for the City of Falls Church will hold their annual Holiday Craft Show on Dec. 1 from 9 a.m. through 4 p.m. and Dec. 2 from 11 a.m. through 4 p.m. The event will be held at the Falls Church Community Center. The city’s Human Services Advisory Council will meet tonight at City Hall at 6:45 p.m. The Board of Zoning Appeals meeting scheduled for 7:30 p.m. in City Hall has been canceled. Walmart, Target and Kmart are planning all-out holiday shopping assaults. Why doze off in a turkey slump watching football when you can be out taking care of holiday shopping business? Walmart will offer, beginning at 8 p.m. on Thanksgiving Day, Nov. 22, holiday gifts for the entire family, while supplies last.
