A federal study of hospitals shows Inova Fairfax Hospital is better than the national average at effective pneumonia care, and slightly better than average at timely and effective surgical care.
If you go to the emergency room at Inova Fairfax Hospital with a broken bone, how long will it take before you get pain medicine? The federal government says 50 minutes on average—that’s faster than the national average of 62 minutes, according to hospital comparison statistics available through Medicare.gov. If you go to Virginia Hospital Center in Arlington, that same wait could be just 40 minutes. At Inova Mount Vernon, the wait could be 73 minutes, and at Inova Alexandria the wait could be 56 minutes. That’s just one new key measure of ER efficiency that has been posted online from hospitals taking part in this data initiative, according to a report by former Union-Tribune writer Cheryl Clark, now senior quality editor for …

Police say they found skimmer devices and cameras were found in the Falls Church home where the suspect reportedly lived.
Fairfax County Police have arrested a Falls Church man they believe to be behind putting skimmers on ATM machines in local hospitals. Ioan Cicio, 39, was charged Monday with three counts of possession of credit card forgery devices (skimmers), three counts of credit card theft, two counts of credit card fraud and one count of money laundering. Police said the investigation is ongoing. “Detectives did an outstanding job of putting together extensive documents, numerous tips and video in this complex investigation; it was a tremendous amount of work,” Lt. Tony Matos, supervisor of the Fairfax County Police Financial Crimes Unit, said in a written statement. In August and again in November a skimmer device was found on the same ATM machine at…

Busy week at Mount Daniel Elementary after two utility lines break in one day.
Before long, a new six-story hotel will join the skyline along West Broad Street in Falls Church. Last week, the developers of the project and city officials broke ground at the future location of a Hilton Garden Inn that’s expected to open early 2014. The biggest talker of the week, however, was the estimated $550 million jackpot in Wednesday’s Powerball drawing. Unfortunately, no winning ticket was sold in Falls Church this time. The closest winning ticket, worth $1 million, was sold in Arlington. Mount Daniel Elementary had a very rough Thursday having a water main break, causing the school to dismiss at 10:30 a.m. Later in the day, while crews worked to repair the break, they accidentally cut an adjacent gas line. All is well at the …

Fairfax County police found a similar device on the same ATM machine at Inova Fairfax in August.
For the second time this year Fairfax County Police have found a skimmer device on an ATM at Inova Fairfax Hospital. The ATM machine, near the gift shop at the hospital, was found to have a skimmer device on it on Tuesday. A hospital employee noticed that the input slot for the card was loose and wobbly, and when she inserted her bankcard, the device fell off. Police believe the device may have been on the machine for weeks. In August, a similar device was found on the same machine. Lucy Caldwell, a spokeswoman for Fairfax County police, said it’s possible the two incidents could be related. “We wouldn’t be surprised if we got reports of more fraudulent charges from people’s accounts,” Caldwell said. “Hopefully people will pay close …

Fairfax County police are still investigating a reported skimmed ATM machine but still no arrests.
Fairfax County police still haven’t arrested anyone involved with placing a skimmer on an ATM at the Inova Fairfax Hospital Cardiac Care Center in August but they have been plenty busy investigating similar cases. Over the last 18 months, Lucy Caldwell, spokeswoman for the agency, said detectives have investigated about 600 cases in the “skimmed cards” category and the number is climbing. “When we say skimmed, we include cases where skimmings occurred at ATMs as well as where the skimming took place at other venues,” she said. In late August, police say a skimming device was placed on an ATM inside the hospital. Caldwell said thousands of dollars were stolen from accounts that were breached because of the device. It’s unknown exactly how …

Inova Health System officials donned chef uniforms and displayed their favorite recipes featuring local produce Wednesday afternoon.
The Inova Fairfax Hospital was transformed into a sea of media personalities, two competing chefs and hungry Inova employees Thursday during the battle of the CEO celebrity chefs. Inova Health System CEO Knox Singleton and hospital CEO Dr. Reuven Pasternak whipped up a squash casserole and stuffed peppers respectively. The event highlighted the benefits of fresh local produce and the impact it has both on the economy and environment. The two high-ranking men engaged in friendly banter with the people who run the day-to-day operations that they oversee at the Fairfax hospital. It was an excellent chance for the employees to have a shot at judging their bosses for once. It was a tight competition, with Pasternak ultimately winning by a small…

Speeding or not, the bicycle rider failed to have proper clothing, lights or any other way to be seen. I don't know, but it also sounds like he was riding on the wrong side of the road. When you look at all these facts, The bicycle rider apparently failed to become visible to traffic. Without facts to prove the driver was driving over the speed limit, could be taken as slander on someone's part.   more ›
