Moran: Northern Virginia 'Best Place' For FBI Headquarters

Officials from Fairfax, Loudoun, Prince William and Stafford counties met in Arlington to discuss six potential sites Thursday.

Local, state and congressional leaders met Thursday in Arlington to discuss six potential sites for a new FBI headquarters and to present a unified front in their commitment to landing the new federal complex somewhere in Northern Virginia. Democratic U.S. Rep. Jim Moran (8th District), who called the meeting, said leaders from Fairfax, Loudoun, Prince William and Stafford counties had a "singular focus" in bringing the FBI headquarters to the Old Dominion. "We're all committed to finding a home for the FBI in the commonwealth of Virginia," Moran said during a news conference following the meeting. "We are all going to promote Virginia as the best place for this relocation." Arlington's role was simply as host. It has not put forth any …

Moran Introduces 'NRA Members' Gun Safety Act'

Northern Virginia Democrat cites Republican polls of NRA members that show support for five measures.

U.S. Rep. Jim Moran, D-Va. 8th District, on Thursday introduced the NRA Members' Gun Safety Act — five gun safety reforms that the congressman's office says are supported by nearly two-thirds of the Fairfax-based National Rifle Associations' members. “The NRA as an organization is out of step with its membership on many commonsense gun safety measures. Polling shows nearly two-thirds of NRA members support the five simple ways to improve gun safety included in this bill,” Moran said in a statement. “The NRA’s absolutist position on gun issues is an impediment to the safety and security of the public. This legislation is designed to highlight that schism, offering popular proposals even NRA members support to prevent more gun-related …

Patrick Moran, Congressman's Son, Pleads Guilty in Domestic Violence Case

Moran's girlfriend releases statement calling police report 'inaccurate,' saying that she fell.

Patrick Moran, the son of longtime Democratic congressman Jim Moran, pleaded guilty Wednesday morning to simple assault stemming from a domestic violence incident earlier this month in Washington. Moran, 23, who lives in Arlington, also remains under investigation by state and local authorities thanks to a video that surfaced before the November election in which he appears to give advice on how to skirt voter identification laws. On Dec. 1, Moran and his girlfriend of six months, Kelly Hofmann, were arguing inside The Getaway in Washington's Columbia Heights neighborhood over Moran talking to another woman, according to a police report supplied to Patch by the District of Columbia court system. At 1:23 a.m. Dec. 1, officers saw the two …

Rep. Moran, Others Urge GSA to Move FBI to Northern Virginia

Lawmakers ask GSA to consider the area, noting that many FBI employees already live in Northern Virginia.

Rep. Jim Moran (D-8th District) along with several other lawmakers sent a letter to the administrator of the General Services Administration urging him to consider Northern Virginia as a possible home for a new FBI headquarters location. Moran, whose district includes a good portion of Falls Church, was joined by Reps. Frank Wolf, Gerry Connolly and Rob Wittman as well as Sens. Jim Webb and Mark Warner in signing the letter. Their letter follows GSA’s request for information seeking input on a new location for a consolidated FBI headquarters in the Washington, DC region. In their letter to GSA Acting Administrator Daniel Tangherlini, the lawmakers asked GSA to undertake a qualitative “source selection” procurement, rather than cost-only …

How to Get Tickets to the Presidential Inauguration

Constituents should act quickly to request tickets from their Congressman or Senator for President Obama's Jan. 21 inauguration.

Interested in attending the presidential inauguration across the Potomac in January? There are a limited number of tickets and your best bet is to request them—now—from your member of Congress. Each Senator and Representative receives a limited quantity of free tickets that they may distribute to the public at their discretion.  Congressman Gerry Connolly's (D-11th) office is accepting requests for tickets and will likely enter requests into a lottery. You can fill out a form on the congressman's site here. Congressman Frank Wolf's (R-10th) office is also accepting requests for tickets. You can find a form to fill out here. Although Patch could not find a form on Congressman Jim Moran's (D-8th) website his office is also likely taking …

Congressman Moran Wins 12th Term in U.S. House

Incumbent representing state's 8th Congressional District defeats Republican Patrick Murray, Independent Jason Howell and Independent Green Party's Janet Murphy in Tuesday's race.

Democratic U.S. Rep. Jim Moran secured another term in office, soundly defeating Patrick Murray, Jason Howell and Janet Murphy in the 8th Congressional District.  "Tonight was a vindication of the President's efforts to get our country back on track after the worst recession in our nation's history," Moran said in a statement released late Tuesday night. "Tim Kaine will be our next Senator, a good, decent man who will serve the commonwealth with great distinction. Our nation faces major challenges that demand solutions. We owe it to the American people to come together and work toward reaching the kind of compromise necessary to get the country again moving forward." This is the second consecutive time Moran has defeated Murray. Moran will…

Rep. Moran: Sequestration Hinges on Outcome of Presidential Election

And the Northern Virginia economy hangs in the balance...

The likelihood of sequestration being triggered in January, will hinge on the outcome of next week's presidential election, according to Northern Virginia Congressman Jim Moran (D-8th). Moran gives 50/50 odds that Congress will reallocate $1.2 trillion in debt reduction during a lame duck session. If they don't, then $492 billion in defense spending included in the Budget Control Act will be triggered, which could result in devastation for the Northern Virginia economy, which relies heavily on defense contracting. Moran, who is running for reelection, sits on the House Committee on Appropriations, is Ranking Member on the Subcommittee on Interior, Environment and Related Agencies and is a member of the Defense and Military Construction, …

WEEK IN REVIEW: Sandy Tops Falls Church News

Residents and emergency responders ready for hurricane.

Hurricane Sandy made her way into the headlines toward the end of the week and we should see the worst she has to offer some time today. No matter what weather the hurricane brings to the area, Falls Church is ready. Earlier in the week, city council voted unanimously to sell the land it owns to a developer who wants to bring a Harris Teeter to the area. The city also announced they will sit down to discuss selling Falls Church Water to Fairfax Water soon. Congressman Jim Moran (D-8th District) was in the news because of his son, Patrick, allegedly discussing how skirt around voter identification laws. None of the four Fall Church-area high school football teams won on the field Friday night, but the areas namesake school’s quarterback, …

Moran Responds to Son Getting Caught on Video, Criminal Investigation

Congressman says his office will cooperate with investigation.

Democratic U.S. Rep. Jim Moran responded Thursday night to his son's sudden departure from his campaign, saying Patrick Moran is learning a "tough lesson" after being caught on video by a conservative activist. Patrick Moran has been at the center of a political storm since a video surfaced Wednesday from conservative activist James O'Keefe in which an unseen cameraman repeatedly asks for advice on how to vote for 100 inactive voters, whose names and addresses he had claimed to have obtained. After telling the man his energy would be better utilized in more traditional, legitimate get-out-the-vote efforts, the younger Moran informs the cameraman that he would need to forge documents to get past new voter identification laws. Though O'Keefe…
