Global security company officially opened Fairfax County headquarters.
For years, Fairfax County had been lobbying to get global security company Northrop Grumman to move their corporate headquarters to Northern Virginia. Friday, those efforts came to fruition as several politicians and community leaders gathered in Falls Church at the new headquarters at 2980 Fairview Park Dr. to officially open the 334,000 square feet building. Though the company has occupied the building since Aug. 22, they were officially welcomed under rainy skies Friday. “We’re pleased to have them here,” said Sharon Bulova, chair of the Fairfax County Board of Supervisors. “Fairfax County already has a defense presence and Northrop Grumman is another jewel in that crown.” Bulova joined Virginia Gov. Bob McDonnell (R), Congressmen Gerry…

Dale says he announced his retirement on Sept. 22 so FCPS, those running for school board and the community can plan a smooth transition to new leadership.
Jack Dale, superintendent of Fairfax County Public Schools, said the announcement of his retirement on Sept. 22, just weeks before new school board members are elected, was carefully timed. He said he hopes that by announcing it early it will help provide a smooth transition for the school system. He said if he were to leave sooner it could result in everyone trying to go different directions at once, without focus. “The community should know about this, the new school board coming in should know about it, before they go through the election process,” he said Dale said the FCPS school board needs to reflect the values of the community and when there are 12 members that is what typically happens. He said the incoming school board’s …

Falls Church couple Monica Boland and Aaron Alford chronicle their return to a running lifestyle.
The cooling weather and shortening days have hardened our hearts against running on roads and pretty much any other paved surface. The promise of fall foliage and insect-free running inspired us to find new trails for fall and winter adventures. We thought we knew all of the local trails and spurs, but a few minutes of online searching revealed some pleasant surprises. Cross County Connector: One look at the map and we knew that we had utilized only a fraction of this resource. The Cross County Connector uses the Difficult Run Trail to tie into a series of trails and parks that stretches a total of 40 miles to Occoquan Regional Park. Along the way there are many regional parks, lakes and recreation areas that have their own trail systems …
The band played through hits and new material.
Christian metal band Stryper played to a relatively small crowd Wednesday night at the State Theatre, though the bands huge sound could have reached the back of a much larger arena. Clad in their trademark yellow and black color scheme, and carrying matching guitars, the heavy metal band ripped through more than an hour of cascading, squealing guitar solos that sang over pounding bass lines. Drummer Robert Sweet’s head thrashed and his long blonde hair swung violently as he threw his arms back behind his head over and over again, pounding on his set. Stryper has had years of practice working on their stage routine. They released their first album in 1984 and went platinum in 1986 with their third album, “To Hell With the Devil.” They are …
Fairfax,Falls Church Battle Over Water Rates
A Fairfax County government agency recommended Wednesday that the Board of Supervisors regulate rates for the City of Falls Church water customers who are Fairfax residents so that they do not pay rates higher than those charged by Fairfax water, unless Falls Church can justify the higher rates. The Fairfax County Consumer Protection Commission also recommended that Fairfax County provide water to upcoming new developments in Tysons Corner. Tysons Corner will evolve into a medium-size city and double its current population in the next several decades, which will result in millions of dollars in connection and service charges. If the Fairfax County Board of Supervisors adopts both recommendations it would lower water bills for county …

Falls Church-based Inova Health System hosted a fashion show for Washington, D.C. Fashion Week, featuring some designs made by hospital employees.
Normally, when models and hospitals are mentioned it is for a much different reason than what the Inova Hospital System was a part of Monday night at the eco friendly fashion show to kick off the 2011 Washington, D.C. Fashion Week. The Falls Church based nonprofit healthcare provider recently came up with a creative way to combine fashion with environmental sustainability, a cause for which Inova strengthened its’ focus in recent years. Fashion Week offered a giant platform from which to display a creative contest for which Inova and other healthcare employees from around the country participated in. Contestants took portions of polypropylene, a plastic used in hospitals to cover sterilized surgical instruments, and crafted them into …
