For the 2013 NCAA basketball tournament, Falls Church's Dogwood Tavern has brought back its popular burger.
Dogwood Tavern will be showing all of the 2013 NCAA Tournament men's basketball games—but it’s another “March Madness” customers will be coming in for. Last year they rolled out a special burger after some customers recommended it, said Jeremiah Mahoney, general manager at Dogwood. Dogwood Tavern's March Madness is an Angus beef burger between two grilled cheese sandwiches for the buns and topped with lettuce and a pickle. Mahoney said Dogwood will serve the burger through the end of March. “We did it last year and it did great,” Mahoney said. Mad Fox Brewing Company, Pizzeria Orso and Clare & Don’s Beach Shack have not come up with NCAA tournament specials yet but they will all be showing the games on television. Where are you watching …

Brewpub opened during recession and has seen tough times before.
Bill Madden is concerned about what sequestration could do to his Falls Church business, but he has seen tough times before. Madden, owner of Mad Fox Brewing Company, launched his business in July 2010 during what he called one of the greatest recessions of this generation. He may lose a few customers to the sequestration hatchet, but he doesn't have any layoffs on tap. “We’re not considering any of our employees go,” Madden said Tuesday. “We have no intentions of doing that.” Some 90,000 civilian Department of Defense employees will lose more than $648 million because of furloughs if sequestration kicks in on Friday, according to an analysis by The Washington Post. Madden isn't sure how many of his patrons work for the federal government…

The Washington Redskins face the Seattle Seahawks this weekend in one of four NFL wildcard games.
The Washington Redskins have spent since 2007 traveling the road back to the NFL playoffs -- but it's been a heck of a ride. Next stop: Sunday's wildcard game against the Seattle Seahawks. All this hailing to the Redskins should seem familiar. In 2007, the Redskins also made the 2007 NFL playoffs as a wildcard team. And, just like this year, that 2007 playoff game was against the Seattle Seahawks. Let's hope the similarities end there, because the Seahawks won the last time around. That game, though was in Seattle. Sunday, the Redskins are at home for the first time in the NFL playoffs since they beat the Detroit Lions in 1999. Find more Redskins playoff history here. His family is in Oregon but his dish inspired by his mother will keep customers at Mad Fox Brewing Company smiling for the holidays.
With his family thousands of miles away in Oregon, Andrew Dixon, executive chef at Mad Fox Brewing Company, has a recipe that rekindles his memories of holiday dinners. Dixon, who grew up vegetarian, said his mom always made different lasagnas with vegetables. He wanted to create one for the menu but lasagnas don’t always hold and lack freshness. For the last 10 years Dixon has fiddled with his butternut squash cannelloni and has finally perfected it. “This is something like what my mom would make,” Dixon said. “It’s almost like a vegetarian lasagna.” Dixon added the dish to the menu at Mad Fox in September and says all of the ingredients are made in house.

Families and vendors all converged on Cherry Hill Park Saturday for the Fall Festival and Taste of Falls Church.
The young and old all found something fun and something yummy at the 37th Annual Taste of Falls Church at the Fall Festival. Temperatures in the low to mid 70s helped get dozens of people out to Cherry Hill Park Saturday. Vendors, including Argia’s, Pizzeria Orso, Clare & Don’s Beach Shack, Mad Fox Brewing Company and more set up booths to prepare samples from their menus. Pony rides and a moon bounce kept kids busy and little boutique booths offered clothing, knick-knacks and jewelry for moms. Check out some of the sites from the festival.
