As we approach the middle of the year, Patch checked in with Gross to discuss issues in Mason District and her agenda.

With summer fast approaching, Patch checked in with Mason District Supervisor Penelope Gross to briefly discuss the major issues currently happening within the district and the initiatives her office is currently pursuing. Gross is now in her fifth term as Mason District Supervisor. From your perspective, what local issues are currently most affecting Mason District residents? Land use, litter, and redevelopment are usually big topics of interest. What, if anything, are you doing to address those issues? Local issues in Mason District always include land use, redevelopment, and transportation. Mason District Residents Talk Budget, Transportation, Libraries at Spring Town Hall

The meeting was hosted by Mason District Supervisor Penelope Gross in Annandale Wednesday night.

Around 30 residents joined Mason District Supervisor Penelope Gross and Fairfax County Executive Edward L. Long Wednesday night at the Mason District Governmental Center in Annandale to discuss the FY 2014 Advertised Budget Plan. Long, whose presentation included information previously reported about the budget, stressed the importance of approaching the budget from a long-term planning perspective to the audience when discussing Fairfax County’s future. “We can’t afford what we’ve been doing in the past, at least not for the next five years,” said Long of the suggested 2-cent increase in the real estate tax rate from $1.075 per $100 of assessed value to $1.095. Residents, Officials Discuss Crime, Overcrowding in Mason District

During a town hall in Annandale Tuesday night, residents expressed frustration over boarding houses and other issues.

More than 200 people crowded into Annandale United Methodist Church Tuesday evening to discuss gang violence, overcrowding in schools, violations of Fairfax County code and speeding at a community town hall. Hosted by the Mason District Council of Community Associations (MDC) and sponsored by Annandale Patch and the Annandale Blog, the two-hour town hall was intended to open up a dialogue between residents and local officials. “Tonight is not about resolving an issue," said Michelle Mock, who moderated the event. Survey: Mason District Residents Concerned about Overcrowding, Community Appearance

The Mason District Council of Community Associations (MDC) released the results of a month-long community survey Wednesday to assess resident concerns in advance of a town hall meeting next week.

Mason District residents are concerned about the physical condition of area businesses and roadways, the quality of education, and boarding houses, according to the results of a community survey conducted by the Mason District Council of Community Associations (MDC). A press release from the MDC states the survey, which launched in early December, received more than 600 responses. Mason District Council to Host Community Town Hall

Meeting, scheduled for Jan. 15, will feature panel of local officials, results of community survey.

In an effort to gather community input about the issues affecting Mason District residents and come up with solutions, the Mason District Council of Community Associations (MDC) will host a town hall meeting Jan. 15. The meeting, which begins at 7:30 p.m. at Annandale United Methodist Church, will feature local officials and community leaders. Mason District Supervisor Supervisor Penny Gross, School Board Representative Sandy Evans, Mason District Police Station Commander Gun Lee, and Fairfax County Code Compliance representative Mrs. Susan Epstein will answer questions from residents during a question and answer session following the town hall, according to a press release about the event. Developer Seeks to Rezone Peace Valley Lane Property, Build Seven Homes

Residents continue to oppose the proposed number of homes for the 1.89-acre property located in Falls Church.

The Peace Valley Lane property located in Mason District could be rezoned from R-3 to PDH-4, allowing up to seven homes to be built on the land if an application by The Concordia Group is approved by Fairfax County. The application for the rezoning of the 1.89-acre lot at 3236 Peace Valley Lane in Falls Church was addressed at the Mason District Land Use Committee (MDLUC) meeting at the Mason District Governmental Center on Tuesday evening where Will Collins, owner of the Concordia Group, shared details about the proposed seven homes to be built on the property. “It’s my hope that the proposed plan addresses the concerns raised in the comprehensive plan process,” said Collins. More Than 100 Attend Mason District Crab Feast Despite Storm

Forty-fourth annual Democratic fundraiser held after storm knocks out power to thousands across Northern Virginia.

The show must go on, as they say, and it did for the Mason District's 44th Annual Crab Feast, a popular fundraiser held by Mason District Democrats. After a strong storm hit Northern Virginia Saturday afternoon, power was knocked out to more than 100,000 in Northern Virginia. Those in attendance at the fundraiser — about 150 — included Congressman Gerry Connolly, Mason District Supervisor Penny Gross, Mason School Board member Sandy Evans, Mason District Chair Rachel Rifkind, state Senate Leader Dick Saslaw, state Sen. Barcroft Association Closes Lake to Residents Following Rabid Beaver Attack

An 83-year-old woman was attacked by a rabid beaver on Tuesday evening.

Following a rabid beaver attack on Tuesday evening, the private lake in the Lake Barcroft community has been closed temporarily to residents. “We swim in that lake all the time. We’ve never had a situation like this,” said Sally Determan, president of the Lake Barcroft Association. “Residents are currently prohibited from swimming in the lake.” On Wednesday, Fairfax County police said a beaver attacked an 83-year-old woman on Tuesday night. According to Determan, a biologist estimated 12 to 15 beavers live on the lake. ABC 7 identified the 83-year-old woman as Lillian Peterson. Peterson suffered injuries to her arms and legs during the attack and was treated at INOVA Fairfax Hospital. Police later said the beaver tested positive for rabies…

Update: Lake Barcroft Beaver Tests Positive for Rabies

An 83-year-old woman was attacked by a beaver while swimming in Lake Barcroft on Tuesday night.

Planning Commission Defers Peace Valley Lane Decision

The commission will decide next week whether to approve the plan amendment for the 1.89-acre lot in Mason District.

Update April 27 8:02 a.m.: The Fairfax County Planning Commission approved the S11-I-B1 Peace Valley Lane property plan as it was amended during its regularly scheduled meeting on Thursday, April 26.
