Attorney: Appeal process to continue for woman who tossed 2-year-old from Tysons walkway
Ten months after a Fairfax woman was convicted of murdering her 2-year-old granddaughter, a Virginia Court of Appeals judge has denied an appeal filed by her attorney. Judge William Petty denied Carmela dela Rosa's appeal of her 35-year prison sentence July 31. According to the Virginia Department of Corrections online database, dela Rosa, 51, is currently serving out her sentence at the Fluvanna Correctional Center for Women, in Troy, Va., about 13 miles southeast of Charlottesville. The database indicates her expected release date is May 8, 2041. On Nov. 29, 2010, dela Rosa threw her granddaughter, Angelyn Ogdoc, off the edge of a 44-foot footbridge at Tysons Corner Center. Dispute leads to a 38-year-old Merrifield man being stabbed to death by his roommate.
Fairfax County police charged a Merrifield man with murdering another man inside his apartment in the 9100 block of Barrick St. Jose Ivan Lopez Castro, 20, allegedly stabbed Oscar Rivera, 38, to death inside a bathroom in an apartment the two men were staying in, said Lucy Caldwell, a spokeswoman for county police. “This is the fifth acquaintance homicide in the county this year,” Caldwell. Caldwell said detectives did not say what the dispute between the two men was about. Another person inside the home called police Tuesday who responded to the apartment around 5:15 p.m. Castro was picked up by police around 1 a.m. Wednesday and after detectives interviewed him, he was charged, Caldwell said. Update, 6:34 p.m. Dr. Jeanne Marquis, Carmela dela Rosa's former psychologist, testified on the witness stand for hours on Monday, detailing medical records kept on her patient between 2001 and mid-November 2010. Marquis testified that she diagnosed dela Rosa with major depressive disorder in 2001, but that the depression became severely worse in mid-2010. "One of the things that was becoming apparent in the fall was her depression was qualitatively and quantitatively different," Marquis said. "She had never been that severely depressed." Agreed. For what purpose are we keeping her alive? It's not like she will ever be a productive member of society if she gets out of jail. And the crime she committed was simply inexcusable.   more ›
