National Weather Service says severe thunderstorms expected inNorthern Virginia through 10 p.m. Friday.
The National Weather Service's Storm Prediction Center is forecasting a risk of "severe thunderstorms" Friday afternoon and evening from eastern Georgia and the Carolinas northward across Virginia and Maryland and into southern Pennsylvania. The watch is also in effect for Fairfax, Arlington, Alexandria and Loudoun counties, among other areas of the state. "The main threat is damaging wind, though a few supercell thunderstorms, capable of producing tornadoes, are possible," the organization said on its website. A tornado watch indicates "conditions are favorable for a tornado and that tornadoes are possible." It is not as severe as a warning, which means a tornado has been sighted or detected on radar, Fairfax County says in its emergency …

The eight courses brought in more than $10 million in revenues in fiscal year 2012.
April is the biggest month for the eight Fairfax County golf courses and with warmer weather on the horizon, county officials are expecting to see a spike in rounds played. Judy Pederson, a spokeswoman for the Fairfax County Park Authority, said April is the traditional time when golfers start thinking about and playing more golf – both because the weather is improving and because golf becomes more visible with key national events like The Master’s. According to the National Weather Service forecast for Falls Church, temperatures will be in the high 50s Saturday, mid 60s Sunday and by Monday, temperatures will hit the low 70s. “Last year, April rounds accounted for about 12 percent of total play for the fiscal year,” Pedersen said. “And …

The groundhog was wrong about an early spring, but Northern Virginia may get an early summer, weather forecasters say.
On Feb. 2, the well-known groundhog Punxsutawney Phil didn't see his shadow, leading an entire nation to believe spring was soon to come. Unfortunately, Northern Virginia saw more winter-like snowfall with cool temperatures in March and snow this past Sunday night into Monday morning that caused school delays and closures and a bit of trouble during the morning commute. But spring is a time of hope, right? "We will really start to turn the corner in April. We'll be seeing a transition the first of April instead of in March like some areas," said meteorologist Chris Strong with the National Weather Service (NWS). "It's a situation where you go from winter straight into summer." Strong said Northern Virginia should expect to see highs in the…

Falls Church is under a winter storm watch for Tuesday through Wednesday. Here's how to stay warm and dry, even if you lose power.
Cold temperatures make preparing for an emergency in winter very different than preparing in summer. Falls Church weather forecast calls for precipitation and cold temperatures, but a lot depends on the track of the storm.
Snow in March in Falls Church is rare, but it’s a possibility this week. In fact, weather forecasters say the chances are increasing that Falls Church may see snow or a snowy mix possibly turning to rain from Tuesday night through Wednesday. The Capital Weather Gang reported late Saturday, “…models now seem to be converging on a storm that will bring a period of precipitation to much of the mid-Atlantic but then head out to sea.” The Capital Weather Gang forecasters are just slightly leaning toward snow, calling this “the best chance we’ve had all winter of seeing more than an inch.” The Weather Channel is noting intensifying low pressure in the D.C. area, but has increased its earlier temperature predictions for Tuesday night and …
