Kids can make the meal for their pizza parties.
Next time your son or daughter asks for a pizza party for their birthday, consider this option: Instead of having the kids come into Pizzeria Orso and order pizza, Chef Will Artley has opened his kitchen to the kids. Artley said he’s already hosted two of the parties and has had a great time teaching the kids how to make pizza. “Just watching them learn what it’s about and teaching them where there food comes from is great,” Artley said. Artley said he wanted to do something where he could teach kids where pizza came from and how to make their own. The pizza party classes are held at the restaurant Saturday's and Sunday's at 2:30 p.m. or 4 p.m. Artley said there is a minimum of 10 kids per class at $15 a child. Children are given an apron…

Falls Church Farmer’s Market director says crops that came in earlier last year could be later this year because of the ongoing cold weather.
If you’re awaiting Pizzeria Orso to break out their spring menu, you may have to hold off a bit. With cold weather affecting some crops, Executive Chef Will Artley said a few of his local vendors have already pushed back some of their delivery dates of produce. At least through the second week of April, customers will have to deal with the current menu, Artley said. “I wanted the spring menu out next week but it will be two weeks out now,” Artley said. “When spring comes, you want to see things like peas and anything bright and green. I never thought I would see a case of peas from a local vendor for $55.” February was slightly warmer than usual, but March has been decidedly cold—even the National Park Service had to move its estimated …

For the 2013 NCAA basketball tournament, Falls Church's Dogwood Tavern has brought back its popular burger.
Dogwood Tavern will be showing all of the 2013 NCAA Tournament men's basketball games—but it’s another “March Madness” customers will be coming in for. Last year they rolled out a special burger after some customers recommended it, said Jeremiah Mahoney, general manager at Dogwood. Dogwood Tavern's March Madness is an Angus beef burger between two grilled cheese sandwiches for the buns and topped with lettuce and a pickle. Mahoney said Dogwood will serve the burger through the end of March. “We did it last year and it did great,” Mahoney said. Mad Fox Brewing Company, Pizzeria Orso and Clare & Don’s Beach Shack have not come up with NCAA tournament specials yet but they will all be showing the games on television. Where are you watching …

Falls Church restaurant encouraging singles to communicate through food.
While some couples will be out dinning with their significant others, Pizzeria Orso is inviting singles to come mingle over food on Valentine’s Day. Chef Will Artley said couples can come to the soiree, but the four-course meal is geared toward the singles. For $40 a person, Artley said people get lobster and crab, pork cheek ravioli and some small sweet bites for dessert. “We’re doing this to encourage people to gather and communicate through food,” Artley said. “You never know.” The event, hosted by the food blog DonRockwell.com, will go from 6:30 p.m. through 10 p.m. on Valentine’s Day. Artley said this is the first time the restaurant has held such an event. The event also coincides with Artley’s anniversary of the day he met the love …

The Washington Redskins face the Seattle Seahawks this weekend in one of four NFL wildcard games.
The Washington Redskins have spent since 2007 traveling the road back to the NFL playoffs -- but it's been a heck of a ride. Next stop: Sunday's wildcard game against the Seattle Seahawks. All this hailing to the Redskins should seem familiar. In 2007, the Redskins also made the 2007 NFL playoffs as a wildcard team. And, just like this year, that 2007 playoff game was against the Seattle Seahawks. Let's hope the similarities end there, because the Seahawks won the last time around. That game, though was in Seattle. Sunday, the Redskins are at home for the first time in the NFL playoffs since they beat the Detroit Lions in 1999. Find more Redskins playoff history here.
