Gavin Tapped as New Falls Church Police Chief

New police chief served as deputy chief for the last five years.

Major Mary Gavin will be the next leader of the Falls Church City Police Department with Chief Harry Reitze officially retiring last week. Gavin, who has served as deputy chief since 2007, will officially take over Monday. “It has been a privilege to serve as deputy chief for five years under the guidance of Col. Harry W. Reitze,” Gavin said in a written statement. “I look forward to continuing the strong traditions and culture of the department and working with ‘The Little City's’ community as the chief of police." With more than 25 years of experience, Gavin has a lot of leadership experience under her belt. Falls Church Police Chief Retiring in November

No replacement has been named.

After 37-years in law enforcement in the City of Falls Church, Chief Harry Reitze is calling it quits. His last day on the job will be Nov. 11. The announcement came late Wednesday afternoon. Reitze joined the city’s police force in 1975 as a patrolman and became a captain in 1998, overseeing the department’s services and operations divisions. Reitze was appointed chief of the department in May of 2007. “Chief Reitze has been a strong leader for the Police Department and the city as a whole,” City Manager Wyatt Shields said in a written statement.
