WEEK IN REVIEW: Inauguration Coverage; Fire Kills Two in Falls Church

Snow hits the area and a local hardware store was prepared with necessities.

Patch covered the 57th Presidential Inauguration Monday with stories and photo galleries. Police news and school news mostly grabbed the headlines in Falls Church last week. A house fire in Falls Church killed a mother and daughter early Wednesday morning. Fairfax County Fire and Rescue are investigating the blaze that destroyed the ranch-style home but the cause of the fire has not been determined. A pit bull that attacked an adult after school hours on the playground at Thomas Jefferson Elementary School is in quarantine in the City of Falls Church. Police say the dog’s owner is facing charges. City of Falls Church Police are still looking for a man who reportedly stole more than $2,000 from a business in broad daylight and fled on foot…

Brown's Hardware Still the Place for Falls Church Winter Needs

Family-owned hardware store has served area since the late 1800s.

Long before mega-hardware stores like Home Depot and Lowes’, Brown’s Hardware is where Falls Church went for snow shovels and rock salt. Some people still avoid those long lines and parking lot traffic jams for the small corner property in the City of Falls Church. The store has been in the Brown family since 1883 and current owner, Hugh Brown, has been at the helm since 1959. He said it’s hard to know how many of his customers prefer his mom and pop shop over the well lit, high ceiling stores, but he’s glad to serve them anyway. “It was a light winter last year but we’re ready for this one,” Brown said Thursday. Northern Virginia Prepares for Next Round of Snow Coming Friday

More than 500 trucks will be out salting roads, officials say.

Northern Virginia woke up to a blanket of snow Thursday and began preparing for the Round 2 forecasted for Friday. Weather forecasters say to expect more snow to start falling between 2 p.m. and 6 p.m. Friday. There is a 70 percent chance that Northern Virginia will get hit with snow, said Steve Goldstein, a meteorologist with the National Weather Service. He said it won’t be a lot, but will fall throughout Friday's rush hour. “We’re looking at another inch or maybe an inch and a half,” Goldstein said. The region was coated with about an inch of snow Thursday morning. Virginia Department of Transportation salted main roads to help ease the morning commute.
