Mustangs couldn’t overcome tough shooting night.
RICHMOND - George Mason battled hard all season to get to the Virginia High School League Group A Division 2 championship but came up short against Lancaster High. The Red Devils beat the Mustangs 66-51. “When you shoot 20 for 59, you’re not going to win with that,” said Chris Capannola, head coach for the Mustangs. The boys were the second Mason team to play for a state basketball championship Saturday at Virginia Commonwealth University’s Siegel Center. Two teams, two different devils (the girl’s played the Gate City Blue Devils) and two different outcomes as the Lady Mustangs won their game 50-47. The Mustangs, a usual deep threat, went three for 20 from three-point range. Noel Obusan tried to lead his team back in the second half. The …

Mustangs will face Lancaster Saturday for VHSL title.
RICHMOND - Noel Obusan said he wanted to play for a high school state basketball title in October. After the Mustangs beat Fort Chiswell 62-50 Friday in the Virginia High School League semifinal, George Mason will play for their first championship in school history. “It feels really good,” Obusan said. “We’ve been working really hard.” Chris Capannola, the Mustangs’ head coach said his team showed resilience in playing without team leader Nate Ogle who sat the game out with an injured right wrist. Capannola said other players stepped up in Ogle’s place and propelled the team to a win. He is hopeful that resilience will spill over into Saturday when the Mustangs play against Lancaster High. “We’ve played teams like Lancaster before,” …

Mason prepared for high paced, guard-oriented Glenvar.
George Mason High spent Wednesday’s practice shooting around and finalizing their game plan for Glenvar High in the Virginia High School League semifinals Thursday. The Lady Mustangs tip off at 8:45 p.m. at Virginia Commonwealth University’s Siegel Center. Head Coach LaBryan Thomas said Glenvar is a guard-oriented team and the key to the game is to not let them get open shots. The Lady Mustangs went through physical, high-paced practices Monday and Tuesday to keep them honest heading into the semifinals, Thomas said. “We’ve been playing great ball,” he said. “I don’t want to lose that.” This will be the Highlander’s fifth trip to the semifinals in school history. Glenvar finished the regular season with an 18-4 record behind team captain …

Mason will play Thursday night against Glenvar for chance to play for state championship.
RICHMOND - By Stephanie Cheney’s standards, she and her teammates started off slow in Saturday’s Virginia High School League quarterfinal game against 2011 Group A state championship runner ups Sussex Central. George Mason defeated the Tigers 66-36 and will move onto play Glenvar Thursday night at Virginia Commonwealth University’s Siegel Center after getting out to a 39-20 lead at the half. “For our team, we have a few players that go out and get the momentum going,” Cheney said. One of those players was Katie Goodwin. Goodwin scored 10 of Mason’s 12 bench points in the game. Cheney said Goodwin has gained the respect of her teammates as a freshman and will only get better. LaBryan Thomas, head coach for the Mustangs, said Goodwin is a …
Mustangs return to VHSL final four for second consecutive year.
George Mason High pounded Essex High for three quarters Saturday before winning a 56-52 nail biter in the Virginia High School League quarterfinal. The Mustangs were up 43-28 going into the fourth quarter before Keith Bundy and Reggie Johnson led an Essex comeback. The game came down to two Mason possessions when Noel Obusan was fouled and sent to the free throw line. The senior guard sunk both pair of shots sealing the Mustangs’ victory. “Every since we lost here last year, we’ve been practicing to get back,” Obusan said. For the second consecutive season, the Mustangs will be playing in the VHSL semifinal. The Mustangs will move onto play Fort Chiswell Friday at 12:15 p.m. at Virginia Commonwealth University’s Siegel Center. Fort …
