Police: Drivers Must Comply as Express Lanes Open

The lanes open Saturday morning, and cops say violators will be caught.

The I-495 Express Lanes will open early Saturday morning, providing drivers with alternatives to the oft-crowded general purpose lanes – and the Virginia State Police want drivers to remember that they’ll be on the lookout for violators. “Safety and compliance are essential to the effectiveness of the 495 Express Lanes,” said Capt. Mike Spivey, the Fairfax Division Commander for the Virginia State Police, in a statement. “The same rules of the road that apply to the general purpose lanes are also in effect on the new express lanes and will be strictly enforced by our troopers.” All travelers who wish to use the lanes will need an E-ZPass or E-ZPass Flex. Carpools of three or more with an E-ZPass Flex will be able to switch their …

Ahmed Mohammed charged with reckless driving after causing crash that sent three to the hospital and ruptured tractor-trailer's fuel tank.

A Falls Church man has been charged with reckless driving after causing an accident with a tractor-trailer Tuesday that blocked traffic on northbound I-95 overnight in Stafford County. Virginia State Police spokeswoman Corrine Geller said two lanes were reopened by 5:30 a.m. and all three lanes were reopened by 6 a.m. At about 11:30 p.m. Tuesday, a 2006 Honda CRV, driven by Ahmed Mohammed, 24, of Falls Church, was driving northbound in the left lane along I-95 through Stafford County when he lost control of the vehicle and drove off the right side of the road. Over the past three years, there has been a steady decrease in sexual assaults in Fairfax County as well as the state, according to the agency. In 2011, Fairfax County police investigated 251 forcible sex offenses, down from 320 investigations in 2010. FCPD spokesman Bud Walker said in 2012,  the department has investigated 154 forcible sex offenses — “at this time last year, we had investigated 160," he said. The Aug. 19 sexual assault in Merrifield was the second reported in the area since May, when a 50-…

Drivers Charged In Tuesday Crash On I-66

Incident that shut down HOV lane remains under investigation

A four-vehicle crash Tuesday afternoon on I-66 West remains under investigation by the Virginia State Police. Spokeswoman Deborah Cox said two of the drivers involved in the crash were charged with reckless driving and following too closely, respectively. According to the department's preliminary investigation, the crash was a result of a chain reaction that began when a Dodge Caravan, traveling between Gallows Road and the Nutley Street exit, struck a Honda motorcycle. The impact pushed the motorcycle into a Subaru Outback, Cox said, which struck a Ford van. All of the vehicles were traveling in the left HOV lane. The motorcycle operator and the driver and passenger of the Subaru were transported to the hospital with non-life threatening …
