WEEK IN REVIEW: Holidays in Full Swing

Falls Church businesses are already in the holiday spirit.

With Thanksgiving just a couple days away, the holidays are here and the Merrifield Garden Center kicked off the shopping season. The three stores in the chain held a “Ladies Night” holiday shopping event last week where they served food, wine and had music just right for the season. Everyone knows the holiday season means good food and great times with family and friends. Natalia’s Elegant Creations is handling cakes, pies and lots of cookies for Thanksgiving and Christmas. Myself, I will be in the kitchen cooking up some dinner dishes and desserts for this week. Falls Church Swimmer Signs With Virginia Tech

Laura Schwartz is one of the most decorated swimmers the Jaguars have ever had.

Laura Schwartz mulled over the offers from several college programs but in the end, the Falls Church High swimmer signed with Virginia Tech. The senior considered James Madison University, University of South Carolina, the College of William and Mary and the United States Naval Academy. The other schools intrigued Schwartz but one thing stood out more at Virginia Tech. “When I visited, I liked the spirit they had and the atmosphere,” Schwartz said Friday at a signing ceremony at the school. “They built a new pool for their swimmers a couple years ago.” Schwartz, a National Interscholastic Swim Coaches Association All-American athlete, maintains a 3.9 GPA in her studies. SENIOR STORIES: Gymnast Sets Bar High, Heading to Virginia Tech

Carrie Murphy succeeded in academics, athletics and community service at Falls Church High.

Carrie Murphy may only stand five-feet tall but she has set the bar high for herself. The Falls Church High senior is heading to Virginia Tech in the fall on the Emerging Leader Scholarship for Corps of Cadets. Murphy has also earned the Wells Fargo Dependent Scholarship, and the Northern Virginia Region Cheerleading Coaches Association Scholarship. A member of the Math, Music, Spanish, and National Honor societies, Murphy has been a captain of the varsity competitive cheer squad and the varsity gymnastics team. She served as a chair in the Leadership Council and organized more than 40 groups into a community parade, directing the Winter Pep Rally and helped make a memorial garden plan come to fruition in honor of a FCHS teacher who …

NoVa Reacts to News of Virginia Tech Shootings

The campus returns to normal following Thursday's deadly events.

4:34 p.m. Another update from VT: "Law enforcement agencies have determined there is no longer an active threat or need to secure in place. Resume normal activities." Follow continuing updates here.  4:27 p.m. Virginia Tech sent out the following update: "Virginia State Police and Virginia Tech Police remain on the scene of an officer-involved shooting on the Virginia Tech campus. At this time there are two confirmed deaths. One is a Virginia Tech Police Officer. The second is an unknown male subject who was found deceased in a parking lot near the Duck Pond.
